The Old Course at St. Andrews
My wife and I were lucky enough to get the full experience for our first rounds on The Old Course at St Andrews. After not getting selected for the ballot, we woke up at 4:00am and waited out in the cold until the shop opened at 7:30am to secure a two-ball later in the morning. It is not something I will look forward to again, but the morning added to the mystic of getting on the most famous course in the world. It was worth every minute trying to avoid frostbite.
Playing the course you have watched on TV your whole life was certainly surreal. I learned so much about the course layout, each individual hole, and what makes the famous holes so famous…. it was a day I will never forget. I played some excellent bump and run shots and have tons of great memories to hold on to from the day. Two that stand out are hitting a perfect butter cut off the 17th tee and then hitting the 18th green with a low runner that just crept out of the Valley of Sin to find the upper plateau. I did not notice spectators watching from behind the green before I played my shot, but after a round of clapping my heart was singing the rest of the night!
